There was an old man who lived with his son and grandson, and every evening he would sit and talk with his grandson about what happened that day. One evening, the grandson seemed upset. "So," said the grandfather, as usual, "what happened to you today?" The little boy sighed and said, "Daddy took me into town today, and since I helped him out with his chores, he said he'd buy me anything I wanted at the store. When we got there, I found a little pocket knife... not real big, just my size, so Daddy bought it for me. I loved my new pocket knife. I took it outside to look at it in the sunlight. When I got outside, some big kids started making fun of me. One of them pushed me down and took my new knife, and then they all ran away." Then the little boy suddenly said, "I hate them! I just hate them!" The old man said, "You know... things like that have happened to me in my life, and they left me all mixed-up inside... That's because inside each of us is two wolves, a white wolf and a black wolf. The white wolf is love and compassion and forgiveness. The black wolf is hate, anger and revenge. The two wolves are always fighting each other inside of us, each one fighting to win us over." The little boy asked, "But... which one wins?" And the old man replied, "The one you feed."
